I love the three wise monkeys...See no Evil, Hear no Evil, Speak no Evil, and sometimes Do no Evil [which in my case I made a kitty]. I have made a few people their own set of wise monkeys according to what their indulgences or evils are. What? You want a set too? You have a friend who loves monkeys? Send me an email and I will glady put the monkeys to work in your honor.
In Japan, Daruma is a symbol of optimism, good fortune, strong determination, and persistence. It is said this founder of Zen Buddhism lost his limbs as well as his eyesight meditating for 9 years in a cave. Because of his dedication to the task of meditation, Daruma has become an iconic figure for those working toward one goal. At the start of a project or making a wish, paint one eye and place this effigy in a special place...perhaps you'd like to reserve an area as a "shrine" for the little god. When your goal is achieved or wish fufilled, you give thanks by painting the other eye...giving life to Daruma. Usually in the form of papier mache dolls weighted so they bounce back up when tipped over, I have made him 2 dimensional and created one of a kind Daruma cards. Currently made to order. Why not weigh him down with a magnet to the fridge so that every time you get up to open it wanting to binge when you're down, you will be reminded of the old Japanese proverb: Nana Korobi Ya Oki--7 times down, 8 times up [so put that ice cream back]. Each one wears a different patterened robe to which I can even sneak in personal elements if you wish. If you feel you need to bulk up on the good luck charms...I will even create a special piece for you incorporating other elements of Japanese culture symbolizing luck, fortune, and even fertility if desired. I'm sure Daruma wouldn't mind some company after all those years alone staring down a cave wall in deep meditation.
